President Uhuru Kenyatta cracks whip on graft laden and appoints Chao Mwadime to replace Kembi Gitura as Kenya Medical Supply Authority(KEMSA) Board Chairperson for a period of 3 years.
United States’ Secretary of State issued ultimatum to have the tainted government agency probed as a pre-condition to release the much crucial ARV drugs held at the Port of Mombasa at a time the supplies have ran out.
Furious President also direct Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe to revoke the appointment of four KEMSA board members.
Kagwe appointed Capt, (Rtd) Lawrence Wahome, Robert Nyarango, Terry Kiunge Ramadhani and Lincoln Nyaga Kinyua as members of the Board of Directors KEMSA for a period of 3 years.
At the same time, the appointments of Timothy Mwololo, Bibiana K Njue, Joel Onsare Gesuka and Dorothy Atieno Aywak were revoked.
Gitura had in March this year been appointed as the new Communication Authority board chairman.
The appointment was however challenged at the Employment and Labour Relations Court by a petitioner who argued that the president failed to form a select panel to conduct the recruitment of the board’s chairman as required by law.
The changes at Kemsa Board come amid ongoing investigations on the operations at the authority following claims of corruption and misappropriation of funds related to Covid-19 supplies.
Kagwe said that they are looking into those claims though he reiterated that they have two issues with ARVs including change in use.
“We have heard these claims, and we are looking into them. However, we have two issues with ARVs including the change in use,” Kagwe said.
“We cannot talk on the matter, we are investigating the issue and we will find a solution,” he said.
Kemsa flagged off ARV drugs in 24,800 packs worth ksh1.2 billion to 31 counties last Thursday.
Another consignment was flagged off from Kisumu to the remaining 16 counties on Tuesday.
The phased-out drug is Zidovudine/ Lamivudine/ Nevirapine.
HIV positive patients reported adverse reactions to the drugs such as abdominal pain, rash, fatigue, headache, vomiting, and muscle pain, among others.
