Prof. Kiama wants graduations unmoved as covid-19 claims 2 staffers

The University of Nairobi has lost two of its staff members to Covid-19. The institution’s Vice-Chancellor Prof Stephen Kiama told uon-staffers and students through a briefing that streamed live on the institution’s website.

“University of Nairobi has also not been spared by this enemy, the Covid-19,” Prof. Kiama said.

Kiama said the two members of the university died last week with experts indicating a possible rise in mortalities that may slow in around November.

“My dear students and staff, the ravage of Covid-19 is real. The coronavirus continues to spread,” he said.

Prof Kiama, however,  said that the university is prepared with alot in place for learning to continue uninterrupted. They have provided students have with e-learning materials such as bundles.

“This intervention brought life back to the university, as faculty and students began to engage. As we were gaining momentum, the challenge of cost of data emerged and threatened to roll back our gains,” Kiama said.

He said the prevailing covid-19 situation will not stop any student from graduating as scheduled.

Education Ministry on Tuesday issued a directive on the reopening of learning institutions in the country.

Prof. Kiama said he has also instructed Deans and Directors working closely with the respective Principals to prepare to open in a phased manner. He stressed that the process must meet the government directive on curbing the spread of the virus.

About admission of new students, the professor explain that the institution will communicates the dates shortly.
