The PS for State Department of Housing and Urban Development Charles Hinga Mwaura has refuted claims that funds are being stolen in the ongoing National Hygiene Programme, dubbed Kazi Mtaani.
Mr. Hinga was responding to a member of the public who warned of a looming scandal in project that employs young people to do manual work at a small wage.
“If you find any theft, I am ready to be hanged at Uhuru Park in broad daylight. We have put some serious safeguard measures to avoid any shenanigans. The EACC are already invited to investigate allegations of chiefs extorting cash from the youth.” Hinga said.
The PS defended Kazi Mtaani project saying that the government has already developed mechanisms that cealed all the loopholes that may lead to siphoning by rogue officers. He also denied accusations of financial irregularities, nepotism, and nonpayment of wages in Kazi Mtaani project.
Last week the project was marred by information mismatches which hindered payment of some of the youth enrolled in the project.
In Eastlands some of the youth were found to have either lied or gave wrong information while enrolling for the programme.
Embakasi Deputy County Commissioner Kenneth Murungi also confirmed that they have come across cases where underages use their siblings’ IDs, while others used their spouses or parents to register for the project.
