The National Assembly Justice and Legal Affairs Committee is inviting the public to submit any representations they may have on the suitability of Justice Martha Koome for the appointment as the Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court.
According to the clerk of the National Assembly Michael Sialai, the representations should reach their offices on or before Wednesday May 12,2021 at 5pm.
The committee is set to conduct the approval hearing (vetting) of the CJ nominee Koome on May 13 after the public submits their views.
President Uhuru Kenyatta submitted Lady Justice Martha Koome’s name to Parliament for approval as Chief Justice nominee following Judiciary Service Commission vetting.
He presented the certificate of presidential nomination, the judge’s CV, testimonials and recommendation of the Judicial Service Commission on the recruitment and selection process for the Chief Justice.
Speaker Justin Muturi informed members of parliament that the president has sought the approval of the National Assembly on the said nomination.
He directed the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee chaired by Kangema MP Muturi Kigano to conduct the vetting and report the findings to the House within 28 days.
Muturi asked the committee to notify the nominee and the general public – immediately – of the date and place of the approval hearings.
“The committee should thereafter commence the necessary approval hearings and submit a report on or before May 25 for debate and decision by the House.”
Justice Koome assured Kenyans of her unwavering commitment to serve to them to the best of her abilities if confirmed as CJ.
