A few months ago, National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) summoned the Chandarana Foods officials to appear before them over a leaked racially insensitive and potentially discriminatory email.
Trouble for Chandarana Food plus, started when a marketing staff, Ms Rita Patel, sent out an email to the supermarket’s managers on its new promotion policy, saying the retailer was now focusing on white clients.
“We are delighted to inform you that our supermarket chain would like to give you free vouchers to winner/raffles/best performer/runners up a candidate in upcoming events. As we are now focusing on white people to attract our supermarkets,” part of the email read.
In now latest issue raised on Twitter, Chandarana food plus has been exposed as just another racist store treating Kenyan staff as thieves.
I was thrilled when Chandarana opened a branch on Rhapta Road but my experience there has been extremely unpleasant. Young Asian men and women monitor every teller and customer as if they are all potential thieves. I find it unethical and frankly racist.

Why do Indian run supermarkets behave like this? In some, instead of installing CCTV cameras they instead put up high stools with young Indian men and women acting as human cameras.

… but that’s what they do! Ukoloni mambo leo. I only branch off to them for a thing or two but not more! Problem is, our guys are so hopeless to the extent any job will do.

This is an excellent question. Why not employ the faithful watchers as cashiers?
I regularly shop at Chandarana's Yaya Centre with my BS antenna up: thankfully, I'm yet to encounter any (c)overt mistreatment or bias.— Vik (@Vik_SM) April 18, 2022

I worked for a major Mhindi owned firm and Wahindi only trust fellow Wahindi. Now the Mhindi GM used the opportunity to loot from the owners starting a rival factory resulting in litigation to have it shut down.

I once worked in a warehouse owned by a mhindi, and life was a hell. I better remain jobless for rest of my life than be employed by those guys. I just lasted there for two weeks and called it a quit.

Why don't they run Chandarana by themselves or get free labour from their 1+ billion population in India, if its all about trust issues

Chandarana’s director, Mr Dipan Thakkar, said they have since started disciplinary action against the offending staff as one of the steps aimed at addressing the matter conclusively.
