One dead, several injured after a gang stormed a drinking spree past curfew time

One person was killed and several sustained serious injuries after a ruthless gang stormed a drinking den on the night of Saturday, April 11.

Kajiado East Sub-County Police Commander Kinyua Mugambi confirmed the incident on Monday, April 13, telling reporters that investigations were ongoing into the matter after some of the revelers claimed that the gang was led by the area Assistant Chief Agnes Saiya.

Some of the revelers had alleged that Saiya led a large group of people who rained kicks and blows on the ten or so people found drinking in contravention of the dusk-to-dawn curfew, noting that they kept demanding to know where the chang’aa (illicit brew) was.

“The area assistant chief received information that there were people contravening the curfew order and in the process of trying to arrest them, some were injured and one lost his life. We have recorded statements and investigations into the incident have been launched,” Mugambi maintained.

On her part, Saiya asserted that she was responding to distress calls from the revelers who had already been attacked.

“I heard some people screaming at a location near my home and I walked there but on arrival, the attackers dispersed and ran into different directions.

“Had I not gone there in time, many more people would have been seriously hurt,” she stated.

The assistant chief claimed that when she arrived at the scene, she found at least three badly injured people lying on the ground.

The attack is believed to have taken place at around 7 p.m.
