A controversial pastor known for theatrics more than the gospel Godfrey Migwi has declared interest in Mathioya parliamentary seat in the 2022 general elections. Pastor Migwi is allied to William Ruto camp.
Migwi, now a fierce critic of Uhuru Kenyatta, announced he would take on current Mathioya MP Peter Kimari in the polls. Kimari is in Uhuru’s camp and is among leaders pushing for former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth to be anointed the Mount Kenya political kingpin after Uhuru’s tenure. Migwi is also a fierce critic of the Building Bridges Initiative that was birthed by the March 9 2018 handshake between the president and ODM leader Raila Odinga. The pastor uses the pulpit to pour cold water on BBI, saying by excluding the deputy president, the initiative is not uniting Kenya but rather dividing it more along tribal lines.

Pastor Migwi has also rubbished the addition of more legislators as contained in BBI as the panacea for solving the country’s political problems, arguing that the Uhuru administration should instead use the available resources to cushion Kenyans from the economic shocks brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic. The pastor came to the public spotlight during the 2017 elections when he cautioned Uhuru against shaking hands with anyone until the electioneering period was over. The pastor who stewards the House of Hope Church in Kayole, was then alluding to the sudden death of the then Interior cabinet secretary Joseph Nkaissery. Nkaissery had appeared healthy throughout the day while attending meetings and even had a drink at Bomas of Kenya before retreating to his Karen home but hours later, he slumped in his bedroom and was declared dead upon arrival at the Karen Hospital.

The pastor also made headlines after he purportedly drove demons from a family in Wanjerere, Murang’a county. He also made headlines when he announced he would not officiate a wedding if the groom will not have seen the bride’s face without make-up. In a post, the House of Hope Church said the groom should have seen the face of the woman he is to marry without makeup, at least three weeks into courtship. He went on to say that cases of divorce are on the rise and this is one of the major reasons people are divorcing as the groom only discovers he has married an ugly wife after the wedding. But since the handshake, Migwi has been a big critic of the government and politicians and never shies away from calling out on what he deems wrong. Migwi, while announcing his intention to vie for the seat, said Mathioya needs change and he has what it takes to provide that change.

Clement Wambugu

“I have lived amongst them, mobilised with them and I’m confident I know the kind of solutions they need to move forward,” said Migwi. Migwi, however, did not reveal the political party he will use but his supporters want him to join United Democratic Movement. Migwi also caught the country’s attention when he expressed disappointment over Uhuru’s tribal remarks while advocating a rotational presidency. The president was addressing mourners at the funeral of Musalia Mudavadi’s mother Hannah in Mululu village, Sabatia sub-county in Vihiga county when he said that it was time for other communities to rule Kenya apart from Kikuyu and Kalenjin. According to Migwi, people do not vote for a community but the individual. Besides Kimari, Migwi will also face former area MP Clement Wambugu who lost the Jubilee party primaries in 2017 among a host of other candidates.
