The special Senate committee formed to broker a deal on revenue sharing formula has failed to agree, meaning President Uhuru Kenyatta will be needed to intervene unlock the impasse.
The 12-member team team has failed Kenyans after they promised to agree on the best formula, fair to all the 47 counties.
Failure to reach a deal worsens the deadlock that has existed for more than two months after the senate failed in nine sittings to approve the formula on how counties share the Sh316.5 billion allocated in the 2020-21 budget.
Speaker Kenneth Lusaka and Majority Chief Whip Irungu Kangata have ruled out calling for another special sitting.
The committee co-chaired by senators Moses Wetang’ula (Bungoma) and Johnson Sakaja (Nairobi) presented two contradicting reports to the House leadership last Thursday.
Majority Leader Samuel Poghisio (West Pokot) and Minority Leader James Orengo (Siaya) received the reports.
The move comes barely a week after the president threw his weight behind the formula fronted by the Commission on Revenue Allocation (CRA).
“This formula was crafted by the Commission on Revenue Allocation and went to the senate, indicating that the revenue should be shared justifiably such that everyone gets their fair share,” Kenyatta said.
