Ever since Friday’s polarised press conference held by the joint teams of the National Assembly and Senate Legal Affairs Committees where there was an evident split within the group, Murang’a senator Irungu Kang’ata has maintained that his reason for objecting to the report is purely technical.
He had said that the most important parts of the report, which the Houses are expected to adopt, don’t properly explain which schedule the articles that have been affected are taken from. He has thus gone ahead to assert that if the proposals are presented to Kenyans in the form that they are in, they run the risk of being annulled by the court of law, a theory he has christened “unconstitutional amendment of the constitution”.
However, speaking yesterday on Citizen TV’s morning show Daybreak, the former Senate Chief Whip appeared to finally let slip the real reasons for his opposition to the report. He was appearing on the show alongside Kiminini member of parliament Dr. Chris Wamalwa and Igembe North Legislator Maoka Maore.
He went on to say that if you take a look at Kwale for instance, it has a total of about 250, 000 voters and is getting two new constituencies. He also cited Kilifi which he said has about half a million registered voters and is getting three additional constituencies. He capped off with Kakamega which he said was also getting an additional three constituencies. He then juxtaposed this to Murang’a, which he noted, has more voters than Kwale yet wasn’t getting any new constituencies. He also made references to Nyeri which he said has more people than Kilifi, yet it wasn’t getting anything.
He then said that had the entire BBI report been fair, in Murang’a County, Kieni constituency ought to have been split into two. He also said that in Nyandarua county, Kinangop ought to have produced multiple constituencies.
