Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has reached out to Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho with an aim of settling his defamation case with the PS out of court.
Kibicho’s lawyer Fred Ngatia told the court on Thursday, April 29, 2021 that he had received a statement from Sonko’s lawyer, Evans Ondieki requesting the PS to consider settling the matter out of court.
“I have received a proposal from Ondieki for a possible settlement. We ask that we come back on June 8 for settlement,” Ngatia stated.
However, Lawyer John Khaminwa who is also representing Sonko in his case distanced himself from the statement saying that he was yet to receive advice from his client.
“We are yet to receive instructions from Mr Sonko. What
happened is this, Ondieki wrote a letter to Mr Ngatia about a settlement, I as
the lead counsel knew nothing about that letter.
“I am trying to make sure that I can get some instructions from the client,” Khaminwa stated.
This is after the former Nairobi Governor had accused Kibicho whom he described as the “deep state” and “system” of being behind the 2017 election chaos.
Sonko alleged that the Interior Principal Secretary was involved in the planning of the chaos with the aim of blaming the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party for the violence.
Kibicho obtained court orders barring Sonko from linking him to the 2017 General election chaos in which he claimed that Sonko had an agenda to damage his reputation and character.
He alleged that the former governor had been making false and defamatory utterances against him since 2017.
In a separate case where Sonko was facing graft charges, his team of six lawyers who were representing him in court reportedly quit one of his corruption cases.
The team, which included Khaminwa and Assa
Nyakundi, accused magistrate Douglas Ogoti of unfairness arguing that they
had not been given enough time to gather evidence from Sonko’s previous
lawyers.
