The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion has directed teachers to obey the order by Teachers Service Commission directing them to go back to school on Monday.
TSC ordered both primary and secondary school teachers to report back to their schools by September 28 ahead of the government’s plan to reopen schools.
Sossion who spoke during a gender based violence sensation programme at the KNUT offices said that his teachers are prepared to recover the time lost since Covid-19 broke out in March.
He also said that he took the position because of the move to review the school calendar due to the decline in the number of coronavirus infections.
Sossion is expecting all teachers back to class including those above 58 years of age and those with underlying medical conditions.
TSC had suggested that teachers should remain at home upon reopening but have dodges the subject now.
“The curve is flattening and schools will not only be putting measures in place to ensure children safety but also that of teachers,” Sossion said.
He further directed teachers to strictly follow health protocols as dictated by the Ministry of Health. The order has also directed primary and secondary school teachers to report first, not later than Monday.
Sossion who is politically allied to ODM leader Raila Odinga has also softened his hardline opposition to government directives. He even squashed his beef with the TSC boss Nancy Macharia. These days they can be seen chatting, smiling and whispering.
