These African Countries Have Began Lifting Coronavirus Lockdown

Today, South Africa has begun to gradually loosen its strict coronavirus lockdown and allowing some industries to reopen after five weeks of the lockdown that plunged the country which was already in recession deeper into turmoil.

The South African government has adopted a gradual and phased approach to reopen the country from May 1. 1.5 million workers in Winter clothing, textile, and packaging manufacturing are set to return to work in the next phase under strict health conditions, according to Trade and Industry Minister Ebrahim Patel.

Restaurants will also open, but only for takeaway deliveries.

The Ugandan Cabinet also announced that the country would lift in a phased manner the lockdown which started on April 1. In a meeting chaired by President Yoweri Museveni on Tuesday, the Cabinet agreed that each sector of government will develop a plan for the phased reopening of the country.

The country will begin the phased implementation when the current lockdown ends on May 5.

Namibia will also on May 5 start gradually lifting the lockdown over four phases to allow the economy to function without compromising the health of the public although the state of emergency will continue for the next six months, the Presidency said.

Namibian President Hage Geingob said they will implement different levels of lifting the lockdown.

“The lockdown will remain the same until midnight on May 4. We will continue to implement the lifting of the lockdown gradually without compromising the social distancing regulations,” he said.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, has said that on Monday it will lift its lockdowns in the capital of Abuja and Lagos, the country’s largest city with 21 million people.

After three weeks, Ghana lifted the coronavirus lockdown in its two biggest cities, Accra and Kumasi on Monday, April 20th. A lockdown of the two worst affected metropolitan areas had been in place since Mar. 30, 2020.

Kenya has not implemented a total lockdown, President Uhuru Kenyatta imposed a three-week ban on movement in and out of four main coronavirus “infected areas”, including the capital, Nairobi which was later revised to six weeks.

However, the government has begun relaxing Covid -19 rules by allowing restaurants and eateries to reopen but with strict rules. The National Emergency Response Committee (NERC) on Coronavirus has approved guidelines for a partial reopening of eateries and restaurants.
