The 2026 WRC Safari Rally has provided a high-profile platform for Kenya to showcase its diverse tourism offerings, with government leaders emphasising sports tourism as a key driver of global visibility and economic growth.

Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca Miano, joined her counterpart for Sports, Hassan Wario Mvurya, at the flag-off of the rally in Naivasha, located in the heart of the Great Rift Valley.
The event was also attended by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, underlining the government’s commitment to positioning Kenya as a premier destination for international sporting events.
With engines roaring to life, the rally attracted global attention, with over 100 million viewers across 150 countries following the competition.
CS Miano highlighted that beyond the motorsport action, the rally demonstrates Kenya’s capacity to host large-scale international events with logistical precision, robust security measures, and world-class hospitality.
The event offers a live showcase of the country’s landscapes, wildlife, and tourism infrastructure, reinforcing Kenya’s branding as the “Origin of Wonder.”
“This afternoon, alongside my Sports colleague, we joined the flagging off of the 2026 WRC Safari Rally in the heart of the Great Rift Valley,” CS Miano said.
“As the engines roar to life, the world is witnessing more than just a motorsport competition. They are seeing Kenya’s ability to host the world safely, efficiently, and with unmatched hospitality.”
The Safari Rally continues to serve as a critical platform for leveraging sports tourism to drive international interest, attract visitors, and stimulate local economic activity in host regions.
Government officials view such high-profile events as opportunities to integrate tourism promotion with infrastructure development, local business engagement, and cultural showcasing, further cementing Kenya’s position on the global events map.
CS Miano encouraged international audiences to experience Kenya firsthand, stating, “We invite the world to experience why Kenya is the Origin of Wonder. Karibuni Vasha!”
The rally’s combination of competitive motorsport and immersive tourism experiences underscores the strategic role of sports tourism in Kenya’s economic and cultural development agenda, aligning with the government’s broader vision to expand international arrivals and investment in tourism-related sectors.
