Traffic snarl-ups to persist, closure of a section of Uhuru Highway extended – The Informer

The Kenya Highway Authority (KeNHA) has extended the closure of a section of the busy Uhuru Highway for a further 21 days.

In a statement, KeNHA said that the closure will start today to Thursday May 20,2021 to pave way for the ongoing construction of the Nairobi Expressway along Mombasa road.

” We wish to notify the general public that there will be traffic disruption along Uhuru Highway between Bunyala roundabout and Nyayo stadium roundabout for an extended period of 21 days with effect from Friday April 30,2021 to Thursday May 20,2021,” stated the statement.

Traffic jams are expected to persist affecting those using the Mombasa road, Uhuru and Waiyaki way routes.

The authority has urged motorists to follow traffic management plans and road signs, as well as to seek alternate routes until a safe, reliable road network is found.

KeNHA had previously closed the section for 20 days beginning April 9 to allow for the construction of the express way.

Already, there have been traffic snarl-ups on Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway and Waiyaki Way caused by the construction of the Nairobi Expressway, with motorists using either the Industrial Area, Jogoo Road, or South B as alternative routes into and out of town.

The expressway construction being done by China Road and Bridge Corporation is expected to be concluded in December.

In March, Transport CS James Macharia said that the Sh60 billion highway was 33 per cent complete.
