Two people died on the spot while several others were left trapped in the mangled wreck with serious injuries after a bus ferrying 33 passengers rammed into a 14 seater matatu.
Reports indicate that the fully-occupied 33 seater bus belonging to Kenya Defence Forces lost control and rammed into the back of the 14 seater matatu belonging to Nyamakima sacco.
The accident happened near Lanet barracks at Dundori area in Bahati, Nakuru County at around 7 PM on Friday.
“The bus, thereafter, landed in a ditch outside Dundori Police Station, whereas the matatu hurtled towards a petrol station right opposite the police post,” recounted an eyewitness.
“Several victims, who were strewn across the road, suffered broken limbs,” added another eye witness.
Nakuru County Police Commander, Stephen Matu, confirmed the incident, stating that he is yet to receive the number of fatalities recorded.
“However, I am yet to receive formal communication from the area OCPD in regard to the total number of victims injured in the crash,” Matu said.
The scene of the accident was cordoned off by KDF officers as rescue operations began.
The injured were rushed to Nakuru Level 5 hospitals while the bodies of the deceased were also moved to a morgue at the same facility.
Reports indicate that several traders who were selling their merchandise along the road were also injured during the incident.
Investigations have been launched to establish the cause of the accident.
