The African Union Commission (AUC) has named former president Uhuru Kenyatta to chair its African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) for the upcoming elections in Nigeria.
On Tuesday, February 14, the AU named a strong delegation of 90 people, including representatives of Election Management Bodies, civil society organizations, and independent experts. “AUEOM is supported by a team of experts from the AUC.
The AUEOM will be led by Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, the former president of the Republic of Kenya,” a statement by AU read in parts.
Uhuru’s delegation has been given three key objections which include providing an accurate and impartial assessment of the electoral process and offering recommendations for improvement of future elections based on the findings.
“To demonstrate AU’s solidarity and support towards consolidation of democracy, peace, stability and development in Nigeria,” the statement added.
While in Nigeria, Uhuru’s team is expected to engage various stakeholders during the election period before delivering their preliminary report on February 27.
“As part of its observation process in Nigeria, the AUEOM will engage with various stakeholders as well as observe the polling process. Based on its findings the AUEOM will issue a preliminary statement of the electoral process on February 27 in Abuja,” the AU said.
