President Uhuru Kenyatta has today, Monday July 27, addressed the nation following a sharp surge in COVID-19 cases over the past three weeks.
Speaking from State House, Nairobi, the Head of State issued new measures in a bid to curb the spread of the deadly disease.
Uhuru ordered that the 9pm to 5 am dusk to dawn curfew will remain in force for a further 30 days.
He also ordered no sale of alcohol in restaurant and eateries effective midnight.
Further, Uhuru announced that restaurant closing time has been moved from 8pm to 7pm effective midnight.
On bars operation, the president ordered that all bars shall remain closed until further notice.
Uhuru directed Inspector General of police to permanently withdraw licences of bars found operating in breach of COVID-19 measures.
In that regard, he directed the IG to file a weekly report of bars that its licences have been withdrawn to Interior CS Fred Matiang’i.
Politician were also not spared in new measures issued by the president.
Uhuru directed the IG to ensure that police officers do not spare any ‘mheshimiwa’ found flouting COVID-19 guidelines or found out during curfew hours and he/she is not a essential worker.
The president also explained his decision for not locking down the country despite a surge in COVID-19 cases, saying the ball was squarely in the court of Kenyans to exercise their responsibility.
He further noted that locking the country down at this point would not help curb the spread of the disease.
