In a viral video recorded in June this year, AIC Elgeyo Marakwet Reverend David Kipsoi came out to lecture teenage girls who give into boys’ sex demands despite them having the power to say no.
Mzee Kipsoi as he is famously known in Marakwet shocked the interwebs with his funny but quite informative sex education to teenage girls that are unfortunately picking unwanted pregnancies at an alarming rate.
On Tuesday, Bishop David Kipsoi, whose campaign lit up social media was honoured by President Uhuru Kenyatta. Kipsoi received his medal from Marakwet County Commissioner Ahmed Omar.
The Bishop of the African Inland Church was awarded with the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear during Mashujaa Day celebrations.
In a video that went viral three months ago, Kipsoi is heard asking girls to avoid being lured by Boda Boda operators into engaging in irresponsible sex.
The video captured the imagination of social media users for the honesty with which Kipsoi approached the topic of teenage sex, a discussion many adults consider taboo.
While awarding Kipsoi, Uhuru said: “He is honoured for his immense contribution to the community having been at the epicentre at the fight against retrogressive cultural practices such as early marriages.”
In his warning to the teenage girls, Kipsoi said: “If you are the one to be seduced, why can’t you decline? Don’t be enticed by kangumu or boda boda rides that eventually make you slide into teenage pregnancies. Wacha kukula vitu mbichi mbichi. Ata mama ya miaka sitini, temperature ni hio hio”
As much as we have to protect our girls from predatory men we also need to teach them how to say NO…..dont be surprised but 70% of the teenage pregnancies would not have occurred if the girls made a better choice and said No.
A new report released in June 2020 revealed over 3900 teenage pregnancies were recorded in hospitals across the country within five months. The data released by the Health Information System survey the numbers spiked after COVID-19 restrictions were put in place. It stated factors like the closure of schools played a huge role in the increase. Most of the cases of pregnancy were marked as results of defilement by close family members.
