Vocal KANU MP reveals the little hidden secret why Gov. Sonko is under siege

Tiaty MP William Kamket could have given a clear indication of why the embattled Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is currently languishing behind Nairobi’s police cells after claiming that the national government has been interested in running the affairs of Nairobi county.

Speaking on Citizen TV morning show, the Kanu Legislator revealed that the national government was going to take over the city’s leadership until governor Sonko is acquitted of all charges

“Nairobi is too important to be left in bare hands. I don’t want to speculate on what will happen at the court, but there is already a clear indication of what will happen to the leadership of Nairobi county…I see a case whereby the national government will take over the running of Nairobi for the interest of the nation,” stated Kamket.

Kamket added that the national government had all along been interested in how Nairobi county is being run and the current predicaments facing the flamboyant governor could have come in handy for the state to over the mantle.

“The national government has always wanted to have a say in how Nairobi county is run. Perhaps this is the opportunity,” added Kamket.

His sentiments were echoed by Kimilili MP Chris Wamalwa, who also claimed that in the last parliament, there was a rejected government-sponsored bill which wanted Nairobi to be taken as a metropolitan separate from other counties.

Wamalwa also revealed there is a proposal by the BBI report which recommends that Nairobi, being Kenya’s headquarters and a city, should be ‘handled’ differently.

However, Wamalwa insisted that for the government to run Nairobi’s affairs, the proposal should first undergo a referendum.

He argued that in case the proposal passes in the referendum, the national government will likely take over the city’s leadership under the ministry of Devolution.

“The government, I think by design has also been very much interested in running Nairobi county. What Hon Kamket is saying is that we are likely to see a situation whereby the national government under maybe the ministry of devolution, is going to take over Nairobi,” claimed Wamalwa.

Kamket’s sentiments come at a time Governor Sonko has denied all charges labelled against him at Milimani law courts.

The court is later in the day expected to give a ruling on whether the governor will be released on cash bail or detained as requested by the prosecution.
