Was Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru killed over divorce? Fresh details on Gakuru’s possible cause of death emerge

Wahome Gakuru’s widow Catherine Wahome

The inquest into the death of the late Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru on Wednesday, October 3, revealed details about the county boss’ marriage to Catherine Wahome.

Family Lawyer Martha Waweru questioned the widow on whether she was involved in the death of her husband, suggesting that she could have plotted to harm the governor.

The advocate alleged that the marriage was on the rocks, citing a 2013 divorce case and added that Gakuru had also withdrawn his wife’s official car.

However, Albert Gakuru, who served as the personal assistant to the county boss dismissed the claims.

He disclosed that despite the divorce case, the couple had already mended fences by the time he was elected in 2017.

The former aide further stated that the county first lady was also running programs in her capacity and at some point, collaborated with First Lady Margaret Kenyatta.

While responding to questions from lawyer Waweru, Catherine stated

“I am shocked. I have never had any interest in killing anyone, including Gakuru. My faith cannot even allow me to do that.”

Chief Government Pathologist, Johansen Oduor, testified that Gakuru died from excessive bleeding following the accident.

During an inquest on September 25, 2019, the lawyer also claimed that the governor’s funeral was rushed.

“Why was there a hurry to bury daktari (Governor Gakuru) and start the plans even before his body got cold?” asked the family representative.

Wachira Keen, who gave his testimony, claimed that Deputy President William Ruto ordered the commencement of the funeral plans after the governor’s body was transferred to Lee Funeral Home.
