President Uhuru Kenyatta’s impromptu visit to Kisumu on Wednesday afternoon temporarily brought all business in the vibrant Lake Side city to a standstill.
According to circulating media reports, the Head of State made his grand entrance at the Kisumu Port airfield at around 2:30pm aboard his military chopper.
Details of the personalities in his entourage were not immediately made clear but police officers who were keeping guard at the port strongly restricted movements in, out and around the facility.
As of 5pm this evening, the President was said to be on the way to Mbita constituency, the hometown of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) MP Millie Odhiambo.
But responding to the surprise visit, blogger Seth Odongo who emenates from the Nyanza region, fired shots at local outlets for what he termed as an exaggeration of the news story.
“Why is it that when President Uhuru is in Kisumu it becomes breaking news?” he asked through a tweet.
In his view, the scribe popularly known on social media platforms as “Dikembe Disembe” explained that this was a classic example of how the Kenyan media treats the largely marginalized region as lesser part of the country.
“Media yet to make Kisumu and by extension Luo Nyanza as part of the territory of the Republic of Kenya managed by H.E Uhuru Kenyatta since 2013,” he noted.
Uhuru last visited Kisumu on June 1, 2021, during the 58th Madaraka Day celebrations held at Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium.
During his address, President Uhuru lauded the sacrifice made by our forefathers who helped Kenya attain self-rule.
