Will David Ndii Survive This?

The state is looking for economist David Ndii, one of Kenya’s leading political economy thinkers, a popular columnist and a longtime critic of the government’s policy of borrowing heavily from China to build infrastructure.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has now opened a fresh court battle against the economist over unpaid taxes.

The taxman via a notice to the High Court has made known its intention to appeal a decision of the Tax Appeal Tribunal which said to drop KRA’s pursuit of a total of Sh11, 395,591 arising from income tax estimated Sh8.4 million and another Sh2.9 million arising from VAT dragging back to 2017.

Although the income tax dispute was settled in an out-of-court deal, the taxman’s claim for Sh2.9 million VAT claim was later reduced to Sh2.8 million was thrown out by the tribunal. the court declared the claim was invalid since KRA had used the wrong procedure to notify Dr. Ndii of his tax dues

People are quick to notice that these court battles always stem at a time when Dr. Ndii steps up his criticism of the Jubilee administration and President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The recent sentiments which may be the root of this manhunt were David Ndii telling Ruto who has been cornered by Uhuru in the running of the Jubilee Party affairs to “Murder his boss”
