Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has today announced that candidates who sat for their 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary School (KCSE) examinations recorded 893 As.
The top candidate is Robinson Wanjala Simiyu from Murang’a High School who got an A of 87.334, followed by Allan Wasonga (87.173) from Agoro Sare High School.
Speaking at Mtihani House in Nairobi during the release of the results, Magoha said 2020 candidates posted improved results as compared to their counterparts the previous year that only had 627As.
“This is one of the clearest indicators that candidates have performed better in 2020 compared with 2019, the negative effects of Covid-19 notwithstanding,” he said.
Magoha also noted that this year there was a 6.6 per cent increase in the number of candidates who sat exams.
During the 2020 KCSE Examination, 747,161 candidates sat the examination compared to 697,222 candidates in 2019.
This represented an increase of 49,939 candidates (6.68 per cent).
Of the 747,161 candidates who sat the 2020 KCSE Examination, 380,327 were male while 366,834 were female, representing 50.90 per cent and 49.10 per cent of the total candidature respectively.
He also noted that fifteen counties had more female than male candidates in the 2020 KCSE examination compared to 17 counties in 2019.
The 15 counties were: Taita Taveta, Kwale, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Machakos, Kitui, Meru, Nandi, Elgeyo Marakwet, Kakamega, Vihiga and Kisumu.

included Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Turkana and Homa Bay.
“I have asked the Directorate for Quality Assurance and Standards to investigate the cause of 20 the low female candidates representation in these counties,” he said.
Turkana county had the highest percentage of overage candidates (1,603: 0.213 per cent) while Bungoma county had the highest percentage of under-age candidates (1,344; 0.179 per cent).
In the 2020 KCSE Examination, 19 subjects recorded a significant improvement in performance, compared 21 to 16 subjects that recorded a significant improvement in performance in 2019.
There was no significant change in performance in two of the subjects offered during the 2020 KCSE examination.
Magoha added that the number of candidates with minimum university entry qualification of Grade C+ and above rose to 143,140 (19.03 per cent) in the year 2020 KCSE Examination compared to 125,746 (18.02 per cent) in 2019.
“The remaining candidates are legible to join TVET institutions, Teacher Training Colleges, Medical Training Colleges and other tertiary learning institutions for various courses,” he said.
