Kenya Government has agreed to share disputed Migingo with Uganda despite maintaining to the public that dispituted Island is in Kenya.
Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Monica Juma said that they had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the government of Uganda to allow fishermen and other users of the lake access either side of the boundary.
The authorities are left to set the modalities of access, management and sharing of the resources in the small Island. Juma told Kenyans that the government has their interests on top and that can be realized when risks they face when accessing the resources are reduced.
On whether the agreement will clearly define where the Island belongs, she said that Kenya must not bully her neighbors to stump her authority as the big brother. She also told Kenyans that territorial integrity of the country will never be negotiated.
Juma was struggling to put a strong face despite presence of Ugandan forces at the Island which is only three kilometres from Mihuru Bay in Migori County. Ugandan forces have terrorized Kenyans in Migingo Island for long.
