Adan Mohammed Appointed New KRA Commissioner General
Adan Abdulla Mohammed, new Commissioner General of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA)

The government has announced that Adan Abdulla Mohammed is the new Commissioner General of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), replacing Humphrey Wattanga.

Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi said the appointment was gazetted in a special issue of the Kenya Gazette on May 18, 2026. Mohammed will serve a three-year term with immediate effect under the Kenya Revenue Authority Act

Adan Mohammed has many years of experience in banking, trade, economic policy, and public service administration. Before joining the government, he had a successful career in the banking industry as the Chief Executive Officer of Barclays Bank Kenya. He has also been in senior leadership positions at Barclays Africa, where he oversaw operations in a number of African countries.

Before joining the government, Mohammed was the Cabinet Secretary for Industrialisation and Trade in the former President Uhuru Kenyatta administration. He later served as the minister for the East African Community and Regional Development before joining President William Ruto’s regime as the chief of strategy execution at State House.

The appointment comes at a time when the KRA is under pressure to ramp up revenue collection as the government battles rising public debt, high cost of living, and public concern over taxation.

The tax authority has been intensifying efforts to expand the tax base through digital systems, electronic invoicing, and tighter compliance measures targeting businesses and informal traders.

Analysts say Mohammed’s experience in the private and public sectors could be a key factor in shaping tax administration reforms and improving revenue collection in the country.
