Last weekend, the family and friends of former Olympics champion Samuel Wanjiru marked the 10th anniversary of his death, as his wife, Trizza, continues to fight for her stake in his estate.
However, on the sidelines, a string of troubling incidents have been taking place in the life of disgraced former 1500m three time world champion Asbel Kiprop, and when placed side by side to Wanjiru’s final days, the current trajectory of Kiprop’s life begins to take on very interestingly similar parallels, giving a frightening and ominous air. This is despite his plea for psychological attention to the then Inspector General of police, Boinnet. This is happening against the backdrop of a video of a young policewoman which just went viral, and has her desperately asking for help from IG Mutyambai.
Despite having made an impact in the Junior’s category, Asbel gained international attention when he was awarded the 2008 Beijing gold medal for the 1500m event, after initial winner Rashid Ramzi was stripped of the medal for doping violations. After that, he monopolised the discipline, clinching back to back world titles from 2011 through 2013 to 2015.
However, in 2017, the athletics world was shocked with the announcement that Asbel had been found to have violated doping regulations, and was subsequently banned for four years, and his victories months prior cancelled.
This sent him on an alcoholic abyss, with his most infamous act being a film of him engaging in intimate acts with the wife of his colleague, despite the fact that he was married. During this period, he had given a friendly warning to the inspector of police to take away his firearm because he felt like he could do anything. Since then, he has separated from his wife, and recently unveiled his new wife by the name Faith.
Events preceding Wanjiru’s death took pretty much the same route, from drunken incidents with firearms to remarrying.
It was widely reported that in a drunken stupor, Wanjiru pulled a gun on his wife, Trizza, forcing her to flee. He also remarried, taking a woman called Mary Wacera who, incidentally, his mother recognised as Wanjiru’s legitimate wife.
