An assortment of counterfeit goods worth KES 5 million were over the weeked destroyed by Anti Counterfeiot Authorities (ACA) in Mombasa over the weekend. Chair of the Board of ACA, Ms Flora Mutahi said that the condemned goods that were destroyed through burning at the Coast Clay Works in Changamwe consisted of various items ranging from fast moving goods like footwear, clothing, electronics, stationeries and cosmetics which were replicas of  some popular local and international  brands in the market.

She added that continued impounding and destruction  of counterfeit goods that find their way into the country through the ports is proof of  ACA’s seriousness and commitment to rid  the local market  of counterfeit products. The board took time off their retreatment to oversee the destruction of fake goods.

Mutahi also expressed confidence that the series of high profile seizures being carried out by ACA  will go along way in planting the seed of  fear in the hearts  and minds of the players in ‘counterfeit industry’. ACA will further open to private sector to create consumer awareness and law enforcement. The body has a National Action Plan to curb illicit trade.
