U.S. planemaker, Boeing, has bagged its largest order so far for the troubled 737 Max jets since the aircraft’s safety ban was lifted in the United States late last year. This comes after Southwest Airlines placed an order for 100 new 737 MAX-7 jets, with expectations for the first 30 to show up next year.
However, the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Southwest previously had 249 orders and 115 options for the 737 MAX aircraft for 2021 up to 2026. It now says the new Max 7s eventually will replace its ageing fleet of 143-seat Boeing 737-700s while providing better fuel mileage. It is also converting orders for 70 Max 8s to the smaller model.
Regulators in the U.S., Europe, Canada, Brazil and other countries cleared the plane to resume flying after Boeing changed an automated flight-control system that played a role in two crashes in 2019 that killed 346 people. Southwest resumed passenger flights with its Max 8 jets on March 11 2021. American and United Airlines had already resumed Max flights, and Alaska Airlines began using the plane too.
