Jamaican Dancehall artist Bounty Killer has dismissed claims that Dancehall music is responsible for the rising crime rates in Jamaica.
Bounty killer says that violence in music started even when legendary reggae icon Bob Marley was still alive.
He cited the several attempts on Bob Marley’s life following his political stance
Bounty Killer’s reactions come amid a recent push by the island’s premier Andrew Holness, who attributed the rise of crimes and violence to the dancehall music.
Holness claimed that dancehall music is laced with ‘Violent’ lyrics.
Bounty reminded all and sundry that crime was historically rooted in political strife.
“How did the great Bob Marley get shot in the mid 70s?” “Was it bcuz of music or political influence on the ppl???” Bounty posed.
The veteran dancehall Star laid blame on “Political indifference, tribal and turf wars.
He believes crime rate is as a result of guns, drugs, illiteracy, unemployment and poverty.
Bounty also linked the attempt on Bob Marley’s life when he was shot in his home during a rehearsal to politics as the then authorities felt Bob Marley’s songs were creating a big division while advocating for rights and justice.
The 1973 incident left Bob Marley wounded with his wife Rita Marley escaping unhurt as a bullet meant for her was stopped by her tough dreadlocks.
In his hey days, Marley fought politicians and bad governance through his music.
He started being adored by the masses with the politicians feeling threatened.
Marley’s shooting which also coincided with the 1976 elections which were dubbed as the bloodiest, is seen as a way the authorities wanted him silenced.
Bounty Killer believes the happenings in the political arena was to blame for Marley’s shooting.
Meanwhile Bounty Killer is involved in various charity works through his foundation as he seeks to change the narrative and restore sanity through alleviation of crime and poverty.
