Angry Nyamakima and Kamukunji traders in Nairobi have demonstrated, demanding the closure of China Square, managed by Chinese businessman Lei Cheng.
The small-scale traders staged their protests in Nairobi’s central business district (CBD) on Tuesday, February 28.
The traders accused the Chinese of invading their businesses as the debate over the business hub gathered steam.
The traders matched to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s office, demanding the protection of their businesses as per the Kenya Kwanza Alliance manifesto.
The store said long queues had given their customers bad shopping experiences and they were working to resolve the issue within the closing period. The management also said they stopped operations to deal with the issue of misleading statements online.
“As a supermarket, we are unable to handle the high volume of traffic, which has become a severe concern for the public safety of all our customers, we are arranging more security guards onsite,” read the statement in part.
