Covid-19 infection has soured in the lakeside region a week after a series of political rallies preceding Madaraka Day celebrations in Kisumu.
Kisumu County Assembly has from today closed for two weeks following a surge in Covid-19 cases in the county.
The speaker of the assembly Elisha Oraro has apprised Members of the County Assembly to sensitize the public on ways to halt the spread of the novel virus during the period.
During a multi-agency committee meeting held on Monday, Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o confirmed that the mortality within the county has increased.
“The mortality within the county has increased from an average of 12 at the peak last year to a new peak of 18 years,” said the governor.
Further, he directed all mortuaries to report daily logs to the county director of public health.
The morgues must further record the time each body is released to relatives and the destination.
Kisumu county, which is considered the epicentre of the Indian Covid-19 variant’s transmission for the past month, had the most new positive cases yesterday with 129.
Over the last few weeks, Kisumu county has recorded a steady increase in its Covid-19 cases which have led to a cumulative number of 5,739 infections so far.
The neighbouring Uganda’s capital Kampala has been imposed a 42 days lockdown.
President Yoweri Museveni re-imposed a strict lockdown in Uganda that includes the closure of schools for 45 days and the suspension of inter-district travel to help curb the surge in Covid-19 cases in the country.
In his address to the nation yesterday night, Museveni said that the move is meant to reduce the further spread of coronavirus, which will be effective from today.
“We are concerned that this will exhaust the available bed space and oxygen supply in hospitals unless we constitute urgent public health measures,” Museveni said.
According to Museveni, the assessment of the impact will help the government decide whether to ease or prolong them.
