Treasury Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ukur Yatani has rubbished ongoing claims that the country’s coffers are empty.

Reports that the treasury had only Sh93.7 million broke last week with a section of leaders allied to President William Ruto saying he had inherited a broke country.

Addressing Senators during an induction retreat in Naivasha, Nakuru County, on Thursday, September 22, 2022, Yatani castigated the lawmakers for spreading misinformation without information on the National treasury’s operations.

“Sometimes we as leaders argue out of ignorance. Immediately after the election, some leaders were saying the Treasury did not have money, it was Ksh.92 million that was found. I feel very sympathetic because there is a lot of ignorance about the situation,” Yatani stated.

He added: “Government does not collect money, store it in one place and then distribute it after one month or year, we raise revenue on a daily basis and fund the government on a daily basis.”

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei was among those who claimed the economy was on its deathbed.

“The economy is no longer in ICU But Death because H.E Ruto found only Sh93.7M at the treasury, Uhuru went home with everything. State Capture is REAL!,

“The country is broke Kenyans be patient H.E Ruto shall fix this through economic transformation and Prayers from all of us. Amen.” he wrote.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, in his various addresses, had raised concerns, saying the country is facing an economic crisis.

The DP said that the new administration would have to work from scratch, adding that the government had pending bills running into billions of shillings.

His remarks came after a section of Kenyans expressed disappointment over the rise in the cost of living.
