Changamwe MP Omar Mwinyi who is on his serving his second term, faces serious challenges from several
opponents among them businessman Abdi Daib who gave him a run for his money in the last general elections.Daib contested on a Jubilee party ticket and was second. He contested the results in court, citing alleged electoral malpractices but his petition was dismissed. He is currently allied to William Ruto’s political wing and is in the race again.

But an emerging political force in the name of Junior Wambua, an MCA for Chaani ward in the constituency is further likely to complicate Mwinyi’s re-election plans. Wambua, a grassroots mobiliser who is a former councillor is being fronted as the Kamba voters’ choice in the constituency. He won the Chaani MCA seat on an ODM ticket and he is a close ally of Mombasa governor Hassan Joho. Most supporters of Joshua Kiminza, an MP aspirant who passed away a few months ago and who had made serious inroads in Changamwe politics are said to have crossed over to Wambua’s camp.

However, there are unconfirmed reports that a sibling of the late Kiminza, one Ezekiel could be in the race. Other little known contestants being mentioned as being in the MP race include Nicholas Mutuku, a Mr Okola and a Mr Kalii. The constituency which had a voting population of 86,331 in 2017, is highly cosmopolitan. The Kambas are thought to be the majority in the area but have not managed to produce another MP since the dethroning of Kennedy Kiliku by Ramadhan Kajembe in the 1997 general elections. Both politicians have since passed on.
