The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has set a date for the by-election of Matungu constituency among others.
In a Gazette Notice dated Tuesday, December 15, the commission disclosed that the constituency’s by-election would be carried out on March 4, 2021 alongside Huruma, London, Hell’s Gate, Kiamokama & Kitise/Kithuke ward polls.
IEBC further demanded that all parties and individual intending to participate in the election would be expected to submit their names before Monday, December 21, 2020.
It also issued demands to public officers who wished to participate in the elections and promised to publish the names of the successful applicants in a Gazette Notice.
“A public officer who intends to contest in the by-elections shall resign from public office within seven days of the declaration of a vacancy by the speaker of the respective assemblies.
“The commission shall publish, in the Gazette, the names of the persons contesting in a party primary and the date of the party primary within seven days of receipt of the names of candidates,” read the notice in part.
The commission further demanded that all parties should solve their intra-party disputes before forwarding the names of the nominees.
It also demanded that independent candidates could only qualify after confirming that they were not aligned to any party for three months.
Murunga, who served as Matungu MP, died on Saturday night, November 14 after collapsing at his home.
