The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has recovered Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) fence gates among a large consignment of goods suspected to have been stolen from a storage yard in Marurui along the Northern Bypass.
Detectives from the Operation Support Unit (OSU) recovered the items during an operation linked to an ongoing investigation into allegations of obtaining goods by false pretences.
According to the DCI, detectives found a substantial quantity of property suspected to have been stolen after conducting a wider search of the storage premises.
“Detectives from the Operation Support Unit (OSU) have recovered a massive consignment of goods suspected to have been stolen in an operation linked to an ongoing investigation into obtaining goods by false pretences,” the agency said.
Among the items recovered were SGR fence gates, scaffolding equipment, steel rail bars, PPR pipes, metallic angle bars and block boards.
Detectives also recovered industrial lubricants, engine oils, solar batteries, motorcycle batteries, LED lighting equipment and wall-coating products.
The haul further included event decoration equipment and assorted household utensils.
The DCI said the investigation is linked to a businessman who has since been charged with obtaining goods by false pretences.
On Thursday, August 6, the Makadara Law Courts ordered the suspect to remain in custody after prosecutors presented reasons for opposing his release on bail.
The recovery followed an investigation into a complaint involving goods allegedly obtained from a supplier through fraudulent transactions.
Detectives traced paint products connected to the alleged transaction to the storage yard, where the complainant later identified the recovered paint as part of the consignment supplied in the transaction.
The DCI said the storage facility has since been secured as crime scene investigators document the recovered exhibits and process the scene.
Detectives are also investigating the ownership of the premises and tracing the owners of the recovered property.
The investigators are further working to identify other possible victims and establish whether more stolen goods may be recovered from the facility.
