As the pomp and funfair that surrounded the recently released Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education results begins to fizzle out, now details about involvement of money concerning the exam’s top student, Robinson Simiyu Wanjala have began surfacing.

For a while now, the commercialisation of education is a matter that has troubled almost all of the recent education Cabinet Secretaries, who have struggled to fight the vice, or at least try to contain it. From George Kaimenyi to Matiang’I afterwards, and even now presently, George Magoha, all education chiefs have continued to seek ways to try and bring virtuous ethics into the sector.

It is now coming to light that well before the secondary school examinations even began, the eventual best performing student, Robinson Simiyu Wanjala, was summoned by his school’s administration, and given monetary incentives.

Prior to sitting his exam, Simiyu is said to have received a post-dated cheque of KSh50,000 from the Murang’a High school’s deputy principal, Mr. Charles Karanja.

The cheque issued as an incentive would then be his award if he topped the country and indeed he did it.

While, this, in itself isn’t an illegality, it is expected to raise questions on the morality of the entire issue, and whether this sends the correct message to other younger students.

As Robinson graced hundreds of thousands of TV screens across the country, he listed, among his motivation to perform better, the need to fulfill his dreams, and also the support which he received from friends and family.

However, the emergence of these latest revelations now bring into question the veracity of his earlier claims, and whether indeed, his push to perform well was entire altruistic, or if it had the promise of material gain laced round it in the form of the now famous 50, 000 postdated cheque.
