Politicians aligned to President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto will meet on Saturday, June 12, 2021 to chart the way forward for Mt Kenya region, days after National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi was installed as the region’s spokesperson.
Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya has disclosed that the planned meeting will take place at Lusoi Lodge in Nyeri. The leaders are drawn from the Gikuyu Embu and Meru Association (GEMA), the three dominant communities in the region.
“I was invited and we will discuss the way forward for Mt Kenya,” Munya said.
Reports revealed that 10 governors from the region are expected to grace the event, including; Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), Lee Kinyanjui (Nakuru), James Nyoro (Kiambu) and Mwangi wa Iria (Murang’a).
Settling on one leader to succeed president Uhuru will prove a tedious task for the Mount Kenya region especially after Governors Mwangi wa Iria and Waiguru had spoken openly against the coronation of Speaker Muturi, one major issue that will dominate the discussions.
Muturi was backed by Uhuru’s cousin Kung’u Muigai as the voice of the head of state. “Muturi will be the supreme leader and will speak to the entire region on behalf of the president,” Muigai, an elder announced.
Former Kiambu Governor, William Kabogo will also join the leaders who will speak on how to choose Uhuru’s successor, a mass drive of voter registration in the area, and business partnerships among the counties.
However, a number of the DP’s allies have rejected the invites to the meeting arguing that it will not serve the intended purpose.
“Those working with the DP have created a framework and blueprint of our coming years and political agenda aimed at empowering residents if he is elected President in 2022,” Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua said.
“I am not aware of such a planned meeting,” Gatundu
South MP Moses Kuria said.
