Garissa Governor Ali Korane has been freed on a cash bail of Sh3.2 million or Sh 5 million bond in his Sh233 million case.
The Governor has also been barred from accessing his county office and ordered to surrender his passport and travel documents in court.
The embattled Governor after spending the night at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) cells was arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi over alleged embezzlement of Ksh.233.5 million World Bank grant.
Appearing before Nairobi Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti, Governor Korane and four others were charged with conspiracy to commit an offense of economic crime, willful failure to comply with laws related to the management of funds, and misappropriation of public funds.
The four co-accused are Ibrahim Malow Nur (Chief Finance Officer), Mohamed Ahmed Abdullahi (Head of Treasury), Abdi Shale (County Executive Officer Municipality), and Ahmed Abdullahi Aden (head of accounting at the Municipal).
The four-county officials were granted a cash bail of Ksh 1.2 million and also barred from accessing their offices.
Korane’s first term in office has been marred with controversies having been arrested in August 2018, a year after his election, over the shooting of former finance executive Idris Mkutar.
