The National Council of Non-governmental Organisations(NGOs) has called upon the government to revamp and invest heavily in the Nyumba Kumi initiatives which had helped supplement efforts of our security agencies at local levels to prevention and fight against crime.

In a press statement, the council said that the structures of the Nyumba Kumi Initiative which were set by career administrator Joseph Kaguthi is intact and good for the nation in enhancing sustainable peace initiatives and thus needs that the initiative is re-activated.

“This way, the chances of incursions of criminal elements from Somalia will be minimized. We call on Peace stakeholders to support every peace effort in the region,” stated the statement that was signed by the national chairman Stephen Cheboi.

The council also called for stakeholders to join efforts for sustainable peace in the country’s cross boarder regions due to internal conflict in Somalia.

The council noted that the internal conflict in Somalia is a matter of concern to the Great Lakes Region and the country in particular due to its geographical location.

“Due to the intervention by Kenya and other regional states like Uganda and Rwanda under the African Union, the people of Somalia have enjoyed relative peace with the contributions of peace stakeholders in the region, Somalia has not known peace since the era of overthrown leader Mohammed Siad Barre in 1991. It is important that our neighbouring nations like Somalia should have peace for our stability,” said the council.

The council advised that Kenya should be weary of insurgents who will take advantage of the instability in Somalia and cross the border to cause insecurity in our country.

“Although, the embattled President Farmaajo has given in to the demands of warring groups in Somalia and accepted and vacate his decision to accept the extension of his term by another two years, courtesy of the lower House without the involvement of the Senate, after the expiry of his term last February, Kenya should be weary of insurgents who will take advantage of the instability in Somalia and cross the border to cause insecurity in our country,” read the statement.

The National Council appealed to Kenyans in counties that border Somalia to always be vigilant and report any cases of suspected visitors in our midst to the relevant security agencies in our nation for necessary action.

They also advised the government through the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government to enhance surveillance at the border with Somalia in order to stop any Somalia factions or firearms from finding their way into the country.

“The government through the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government should also enhance surveillance at the border with Somalia in order to stop any Somalia factions or firearms from finding their way into the country. We highly appreciate the role Kenya Government has been doing to enhance peace and security within the region,” he stated.
