Govt To Lock Down Eastleigh Which Is Nairobi’s COVID-19 Hotspot

The Kenyan government has decided to take drastic measures to contain the spread of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Eastleigh where the highest number of positive cases in the the countries’ capital has been recorded.

“By Today GSU contingents will be deployed to Eastleigh. If the security measures fail, the government will have no choice but to out Eastleigh under total lockdown.” Mp Yusuf Hassan Says.

This comes a day after the Eastleigh Business Community resolved to close down all businesses in the area until further notice as a means of combating the virus.

The community, through their Secretary-General Omar Hussein, said they had opted to close down without notice so as to avoid panic shopping by the residents which would lead to disregarding government directives on social distancing.

“This is necessary since coronavirus is real and most of the people in the malls are not following the regulations set up by the government,” said Hussein.

Kamukunji MP welcomed the idea posting on twitter that the move would be an important step in stopping the spread in the area, “I welcome the decision of Eastleigh traders to close their businesses w/immediate effect as a necessary first step to contain the spread of #COVID19. This will allow a thorough review & reinforcement of the key public health measures aimed at fighting the virus,” he wrote.
