HELB will publish names, photos to shame defaulters

The Higher Education Loans Board is planning to publish the names and photographs of defaulters in a bid to save needy children who should depend on the education loans.

Helb board will publish pictures and names of beneficiaries who have defaulted to return the favour from 1975 in the leading dailies.

In a statement helb said that beneficiaries who have not responded to to previous communication have sustained the default and are hindering other needy students from getting the funds.

The planned publication will be after the expiry of 30 days from the date of the notice and therefore legal action may be taken against each defaulter. It advised beneficiaries who are not servicing their loans are o get in touch with HELB for particulars of their loan accounts.

Only 150,000 graduates are repaying their Sh23.6 billion loans and at least 440,000 Helb loan defaulters expected to pay Sh52.1 billion are on the run, the board said.

Helb also warned that another 390,000 graduates are holding Sh37.2 billion in loans that have not yet matured ant currently the board is paying Sh11.2 billion to 277,000 students annually with the Treasury providing only Sh7.44 billion.

Each student should receive  Sh122,000 loan annually instead of the Sh37,000 that they are now given following the high cost of living.
