How Moi International Airport Is Exposing Mombasa Residents To Coronavirus

Residents from Mombasa County, have raised concerns over unsafe practices that continue to go on at the  Moi International Airport. Despite the new rules and regulations put in place to help contain the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), the Mombasa County Government has contracted a French construction company that completely disregards the regulations and is putting everyone at risk.

The construction company has been contracted to do the Rehabilitation of the Airport. Despite the rising number of coronavirus cases in Mombasa, residents say the company still doesn’t adhere to the health safety standards put in place by the Ministry of Health.

The Company has over 300 employees, all working in and around the airport. All these people come from different parts of Mombasa. They scramble to board the staff buses every day in and out of the Airport.

Only a few of the workers can be seen wearing face masks despite the government directive that makes it illegal in Kenya and the workers go about every day like it’s normal, “Social distancing in at almost 0,” a resident laments.

Their working areas are overcrowded putting each one of the employees at great risk of contracting the Coronavirus.

Residents want action taken as the company could be the next hotspot for COVID 19.
