A Nairobi court has charged one Safaricom staff who was accused of stealing money from a dead customer’s Mpesa account.
Peter Odhiambo Ochieng, the accused suspect is alleged to have illegally accessed a Safaricom Sim Card belonging to a deceased woman and withdrew more than Sh40,000.
According to the charge sheet seen by Kenyan Bulletin on July 26, 2019, reads, “by virtue of being an employee of the giant telecommunications company, Ochieng accessed a Sim Card belonging to late Janet Khaniri, wife to Wilson Karani Khaniri. He then proceeded to steal Sh45,600 from the deceased’s Mpesa wallet on the same date at an unknown location within the Republic of Kenya.”
Ochieng, who appeared before Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Martha Mutuku, pleaded not guilty to all charges leveled against him. Through his attorney, Ochieng pleaded for lenient bail terms saying that his young family solely depends on him to put food on the table.
Additionally, he told the court that he was facing a similar charge in another court where his employer is still the complainant. Ochieng was granted a cash bail of Sh100,000 or an alternative of a Sh200,000 bond.
