Kenyan gambling firm, SportPesa, has gotten a new license from the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) to resume operations since shutting down in 2019.
SportPesa CEO Ronald Karauri broke the good news to gamblers on social media, stating that they had resumed operations under a new Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) licence.
“As market leaders, SportPesa will focus on upholding the highest standards of service and responsible gaming. We look forward to working closely with BCLB and all other stakeholders.
“We are excited to explore a wide range of partnerships in Kenya over the coming weeks and months, which will prioritize the development of sports in communities across our Great Country,” Karauri posted on his Twitter account.

Sportpesa left the Kenyan market last year citing heavy taxation and frustrations from the state.
The firm that was sponsoring many local teams felt disappointed in the state after it imposed a 20% tax all betting stakes.
“SportPesa is disappointed with the decision by the Kenyan legislature to impose a 20% excise tax on all betting stakes. The tax is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of how revenue generation works in the industry. These taxes have a damaging impact on our customers,” statement read.
But SportPesa promised a comeback if the government agreed to relook the tax issue and make the business conducive for all the players including the customers.
“Until such time that adequate taxation and non-hostile regulatory environment is returned, the SportPesa brand will halt operations in Kenya.”
The website is already up and running with many gamblers expressing their excitement and readiness to resume gaming.
