KenGen CEO Rebecca Miano has been named to The Africa.com Definitive List of Women CEOs, which was announced on October 13th, 2021, at The Definitive List Summit.
MD Rebbeca Miano is one of the 50 African women who qualified from a pool of 526 women who own 355 businesses. This is either the CEO of a publicly-traded African company, the division head of a publicly traded African company or the Africa-region or Africa country head of a worldwide firm.
Other Kenyan women CEOs named in the list are EABL CEO Jane Karuku and Diamond Trust Bank (DTB) Group CEO, Naseem Devji.
Africa.com undertook a rigorous, data-driven research project that identified not just high-profile personalities, but the women who run the largest, most complex businesses on the African continent. This included reviewing all publicly listed companies on all of the twenty-one stock exchanges in Africa – a list of over 1400 companies.
Miano took over KenGen in August 2017 after beating over 90 other candidates for the position. KenGen has remained creative in the energy business, securing forward-thinking contracts in the region.
The state-owned power generator has utilized its in-house knowledge and experience to help other African countries use their geothermal resources, increasing value for our shareholders.
KenGen was among a consortium of businesses given a Sh7.6 billion contract to dig geothermal wells for Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) near Aluto, Ethiopia, in February 2019. The project is nearing completion.
This was quickly followed by yet another deal to drill twelve geothermal wells in October 2019. The latter contract worth Sh6.3 billion was entered with Tulu Moye Geothermal Operations (TMGO) PLC.
Furthermore, KenGen won yet another tender to drill geothermal wells in Djibouti, adding to its rapidly growing portfolio.
The contract worth Sh709 million currently being executed involves the drilling of two confirmed and one optional well for the Djiboutian Office of Geothermal Energy Development (ODDEG) in Galla Le Koma.
Currently, a partnership proposal to drill geothermal wells in Rwanda is under discussion. At the helm of the KenGen, she has been instrumental in driving innovations in the business.
Ms Miano joined KenGen in 1998 and held several positions before being appointed CEO & MD, including senior legal officer, assistant company secretary, and legal affairs director.
She has a Bachelor of Laws with Honours, a Diploma in Law, and post-graduate studies in Comparative Law. She also belongs to the Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya (ICPSK) and the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), and she serves on the World Bank Gender Council.
