Kenyans’ obsession with wealth, power and privilege was brought to the fore over the weekend, following news that State House had just gotten its water supply halted by the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company.
Majority of Kenyans were in shock and expressed disbelief at the fact that the residence of the country’s most powerful man could also miss out on such an essential utility.
However, this reaction by Kenyans, and their open fixation on State House, totally eclipsed something equally important, if not more important, that was happening simultaneously in the background.
In the same NCWSC circular which announced that State House would have its water supply halted, there was also information that four major hospitals within the city would experience a dry spell as well.
In a notice in the dailies, the water company said the water shortage would last 24 hours starting from 6 am on Thursday to 6 am Friday 7th.
It went ahead to state that;
Areas to be affected by the water shut down include: City Mortuary, Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi Hospital, Coptic Hospital, State House, Lavington, Kileleshwa, Kibera, Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri), Golf Course estate, Kenyatta Market, Karen, and areas along Gitanga Road.
Others are Kenya Wildlife Service headquarters, Lang’ata barracks, Forces Memorial Hospital and Department of Defence headquarters
The interruption will also affect Lang’ata estates, Makadara, St Mary’s Hospital, Strathmore University, and Wilson Airport, all along Langa’ta Road.
Waiyaki Way including Loresho, RedHill, Kitisuru, Nyari, University of Nairobi Main Campus Residence Halls, Parklands Campus, Chiromo Campus, Westlands, and Parklands will also go without water.”
Despite the fact that four major health facilities were to be without water and at such a sensitive time when the country is under siege from the deadly Corona virus, still, most Kenyans barely even noticed this, and were more preoccupied with the fact that Uhuru, who most certainly has millions of cubic litres in reservoirs, would also be going without water.
