Kenyans outraged after report lists how much each neighbouring country pays for internet – Kenyan_Report

The realisation that Kenyans are being overcharged when it comes to Internet Services has sent the online community livid and angry from indignation.
Despite Museveni having imposed an Internet Tax on Ugandans, it still remains cheaper to use the service in the country compared to Kenya.

A report which laid side by side the prices that are paid by Kenyans in comparison to her regional neighbours brought to the fore the discrepancies in terms of taxation, and pricing by the particular ICT departments of each country.

In the global rankings, Tanzania is ranked at position 32, Uganda at position 86 while Kenya and Ethiopia are ranked at position 118 and 94 respectively.

In Tanzania, internet consumers will pay an average of Sh80 (0.75 USD) for one gigabyte of data compared to a consumer in Uganda and Kenya who part with Sh166 (USD 1.56) and Sh240 (USD2.25) for one GB of Internet respectively.

A consumer in Ethiopia will part with Sh182 (USD 1.71) for one gigabyte. Sudan has the cheapest internet in Africa and ranks fifth globally, its consumers pay Sh29 (USD 0.27) for one GB.

Out of the ten most expensive countries, Sub-Saharan Africa produced six countries, including Sao Tome and Principe, Malawi and Chad.

The most expensive place in the world to buy mobile data is Equatorial Guinea, where the average cost of one gigabyte (1GB) is Sh5,312 (US$49.67) – nearly a thousand times the cost of mobile data in Israel-which has the cheapest mobile data plan in the world.

Other top countries from the region with the highest data prices across the globe include São Tomé and Príncipe Sh3,312 (US$30.97), Malawi Sh2,723 (US$25.46) and Chad Sh2,495 (US$23.33) at the bottom of the table.
