Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru’s impeachment motion is set to be investigated by a Committee comprising of 11 senators proposed by the Senate Business Committee.
The plenary is set to debate the case on Tuesday, June 16, with the Majority leader expected to move a motion on establishment of a Select Committee.
The 11 Senators proposed to form the committee include:
Senator Abshiro Halake – Nominated Senator (KANU)
Senator Michael Mbito – Trans Nzoia (Jubilee)
Senator Mwangi Paul Githiomi – Nyandarua (Jubilee)
Senator Beth Mugo – Nominated (Jubilee)
Senator Anuar Loitiptip – Lamu (Jubilee)
Senator Philip Mpaayei – Kajiado (Jubilee)
Senator Cleophas Malalah – Kakamega (ANC)
Senator Beatrice Kwamboka – Nominated Senator ODM
Senator Stewart Madzayo – Kilifi (ODM)
Senator Judith Pareno – Nominated Senator (ODM)
Senator Moses Kajwang’ – Homa Bay (ODM)
The fate of the governor will be in the hands of the 6 senators who will be part of the 11-member team.
The committee will be subjected to a vote and the majority (6) will either chose to uphold her impeachment or squash it.
Kirinyaga MCAs on June 9, moved to impeach the county head presenting evidence that led to their decision to impeach Waiguru.
Kinyua Wangui MCA Mutira Ward detailed several tenders that raised questions of conflict of interest as well as misappropriation of public funds.
Waiguru becomes the second governor in 2020 to come under the threat of impeachment after her Kiambu counterpart Ferdinand Waititu was ejected on corruption charges in January 2020.
