Looting At MCSK and Other Content Management Organizations (CMOs)

Looting At MCSK and Other Content Management Organizations (CMOs)

The chief editor of this site has received information that is fit for consumption by both the musicians and public at this point in time.

Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) paid musicians Kshs. 2500, ‘na ya kutoa’ through MPESA, but how comes yet they collect royalty on behalf of musicians and other content creators numbering over 10,000?

Some of those paid Kshs. 2500 are big names whose music is played in almost all joints, public service vehicles and radios on repeat.

Rapper Khaligraph Jones for example has been on top of his game and receiving Kshs. 2500 is actually an insult if not petty.

Information received by Kenyan Bulletin points to the management at these organizations registered by the Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO) paying themselves huge perks yet it is not their sweat.

‘Imagine a board member in these organizations takes home Kshs. 15000 per sitting and they meet even 10 times in a month and an artist takes home 2500 per year’, said the insider.

‘It’s depressingly unfortunate’, he concluded

The siting allowance of Kshs. 15,000 is the package across all content management organizations (CMOs) which include Kenya Association of Music Producers (KAMP), Performers Rights Society of Kenya (PRISK) and Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK).

The three were issued with license by KECOBO in January 2019 to collect royalties on behalf of musicians in 2019.

MCSK on one hand was coming in after a 2 year freeze for questionable accounting practices.

It has not been lost on Kenyans that MCSK did pay the best music group Elani in the 2014 – 2015 a paltry royalty of Kshs 31,000.

It is only after complains from the group that MCSK raised the figure to Ksh. 300,000.

MCSK is not the best and should be disbanded forever.

MCSK has defended itself claiming they have not received money from broadcasters.
