Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has assured Kenyans that all is set for schools to reopen today for the third-term of 2020 academic year.

The third term that was distracted by the Covid-19 pandemic is will run for eight weeks until July 16 then learners will take a week-long break.

Speaking yesterday, Magoha said schools are expected to be adequately prepared, by putting in place measures to adhere to the Ministry of Health Covid-19 protocols.

“We do not want to hear any excuse that you have not been empowered to run schools. I want to thank head teachers for having done an excellent job in the past and ensured that children are well taken care of,” he said.

On the third-term expenditure, Magoha last week said that the government released Sh7.5 billion to
secondary schools.

Speaking on Friday at Starehe Boys Centre during the close of the KCSE marking exercise, he said that the ministry has made a request to National Treasury for the release of Sh13 billion third term monies for secondary schools and Sh2.8 billion for primary, which should be available by the end of the
week.

The funds will be used to prepare utilities necessary for schools to adhere to safety protocols to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Managers will set up hand washing points, buy thermo guns and install fittings for proper classroom and dormitory ventilation.

Grade 4 learners will remain at home given that they had already covered their third term of the 2020 academic year.

“I wish to emphasize that Grade 4 learners will remain at home until July 26, 2021 when schools will open for the first term of the 2021 academic calendar,” Magoha said.

On vaccination, Magoha said that vaccination process will enable schools to remain open in the midst of the pandemic.

Over 140,000 teachers have been vaccinated.

However, the government and teachers unions yesterday raised alarm over low uptake of Covid-19 vaccine among teachers after realization that only 41 per cent had taken the jab ahead of reopening of schools today.
